Cool Stuff - Wolfram Alpha

Category Cool Stuff

Check out a demo of this cool new search engine here . When most of us want something from the internet we simply type into Google a search phrase. It then returns thousands, often millions of results. Even Google doesn't think you'll want to sift through all of their results, they only give you access to the first 1000 or so results. The sheer volume of information Google spits at you can make it tough to get exactly what you want.

Wolfram Alpha, a new search engine from Wolfram, tries to simplify the searching experience by giving you only information. Say you are trying to open a new branch of your business. You can search demographics of a particular area, such as population in an area. For Anaheim you would search anaheim population 2000, anaheim population 1980 . Or say if you wanted to compare sales taxes in different markets where your product was sold, simply type in: sales tax Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles. What you get back are condensed, easy to read charts and graphs which tell you exactly what you want to know, without having to search through several different websites.

Besides creating easily readable results, the website can also do most of the functions of Wolfram's Mathematica program, allowing you to use statistical and other interpretations of data. Say you have a commodity that you buy regularly, paper let's say, and you want a rough estimate of the trend of its price. Type in the data points and it will give you an equation, which you can then use to see ballpark future costs. Although the website doesn't know everything it has a wide array of everyday functions that you can easily use, try it out here.

Cool Stuff - Great New Phones With Unlimited Data

Category Cool Stuff

With AT&T eliminating their unlimited data plan, you might be thinking its time to switch to another carrier. All of the other major carriers still have unlimited data plans and they all have a great selection of new phones running Google's Android operating system. Android is rapidly gaining in market share, having recently surpassed the iPhone OS in market share. Because of this developers are increasingly working on apps for Android devices, rapidly closing the gap the iPhone had.

Verizon has a new phone from HTC, the Droid Incredible. Although not offering 4G speeds like Sprint's EVO, it still benefits from Verizon's large and reliable 3G network. You won't drop calls as often as on AT&T. The phone is very similar to the Nexus One which Google itself markets. It benefits from a similar fast processor and large screen. Since this isn't an iPhone you also have flash, albeit in a lite version.

Sprint has a brand new phone to compliment its brand new 4G network, the HTC EVO. Its large screen and blistering download speeds will have you leaving your iPhone in no time. Sprint also hasn't saturated its wireless and so has less motivation to cancel its unlimited plan like AT&T did. In addition you won't have to compete with as many users for limited network capacity like on the bigger networks. The EVO has a front facing camera as well, making video chatting and taking pictures of yourself easy.

Either of these two options will give you all the data you want, without having to pay per megabyte like on the iPhone.

Gift Idea - The Beatles: Rock Band - PS3, XBox 360, Wii.

Category Cool Stuff

Because the holiday season is upon us, we felt it would be a good idea to profile a hot gift item that appeals to the broadest of audiences; something that teenagers, baby boomers, men and women alike can both appreciate and enjoy. When I think about something that fits the criteria, I think about none other than The Beatles: Rock Band for XBox 360, PS3 and Wii.

A picture named M2

Combining the short attention span of today's youth with the musical culture of their parents and grandparents, this version of Rock Band has become a staple in many homes in the mere three months it has been on shelves. The track list includes 45 songs chosen from 12 of the albums that the Beatles recorded between 1962 and 1969 under contract with EMI. If you become tired of those, the remaining songs on Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road and Rubber Soul are available for digital download at $2 a piece.

The instruments that come in the $199 - $250 Limited Edition are replicas of the bass, guitars and drums that the Beatles helped make famous. If you already bought Rock Band 1 or 2, you can use your existing hardware and get away with just purchasing the game for $50. The
official website has all of the extra details and links to retailers to make your purchase. I recommend Frys, who is selling the full kit for $199 ($50 cheaper than anyone else).

Cool Stuff - The New Lenovo Thinkpad T400s.

Category Cool Stuff

The new T400s by Lenovo recently received an "Editors' Choice" award from Laptop Magazine and earned a claim that the 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo and solid state drive make the machine a record-breaker. The magazine's article states, "On PCMark Vantage, the T400s scored the highest we've ever seen on any laptop we've tested, and almost 3,000 points above the category average for thin-and-light notebooks." Lenovo has managed to take a fairly powerful business laptop, cut its thickness nearly in half and keep all of the functionality. Half of our staff doing IT support in Los Angeles are operating on Lenovo machines, and I can tell you that the old T400 is a beast in comparison: It has come down from 1.5 inches thick to only 0.8 and from 5+ pounds to 3.9. When you are lugging a laptop around every day, the weight and size really become apparent. The T400s is one of the few all-purpose laptops around right now with both size and weight in the ultra-portable category.

A picture named M2

As mentioned before, the selling point isn't just the size. Lenovo has continued to make the T series better by adding a larger (and multi-touch) track pad, a fingerprint scanner that bypasses the start button and an upgrade option for a touch-screen with rich features that allow you to naturally control your applications with your fingertips when a mouse or keyboard starts to feel cumbersome. The Lenovo site profiles everything new and noteworthy about their T400s and features a great supplemental video. If you have been on the fence about buying yourself an upgrade, this great new machine will definitely make your decision easier.

Cool Stuff - Mifi: A Wireless Network In Your Pocket!

Category Cool Stuff

Staying connected on the road is always tough and there are so many opportunities to waste money. Do you spend $9.95 for 24 hours of internet access in your hotel? Do you pay for a subscription at a place like Starbucks and continually stop to check email before hurrying back out? If you are around other family members or business colleagues, do you all pay for your own connections? That gets expensive!

A picture named M2

Novatel Wireless has released a product through Verizon and Sprint that is sure to turn a head or two called "MiFi." It is a device the size of a few stacked credit cards that uses mobile broadband to create a WiFi network accessible to up to five devices! Unlike Bluetooth tethering (if you happen to be one of the lucky few that has a compatible phone / cell plan), the MiFi has a built-in battery that can broadcast a protected Wi-Fi signal for over four hours and every device connected to it can talk to one another and share files in the same way they can with a standard wireless router. A built-in Micro-SD card reader allows you to store and share up to 16GB of files. Available through Virgin Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and a few other carriers, the MiFi is offered at a deep discount when signing up for the mobile broadband plan needed to operate. Head to the Novatel site first to learn more and pick your carrier.

Cool Stuff - Blackberry Tour: The New International Blackberry from Verizon.

Category Cool Stuff

If you are on the Verizon network and require a next-generation Blackberry with world-roaming capability, RIM has heard your prayers and delivered accordingly. Complete with a 3 megapixel camera, very well-reviewed GPS capability, Bluetooth and the classic Blackberry QWERTY keyboard, this phone has been proving itself to be one of the best smartphones available to both business and casual users. The Tour ships with a SIM card and it will automatically switch from the U.S. CDMA to a roaming network automatically when you leave the country; your phone number even remains the same. While the browser rating remains relatively low (as with most Blackberry devices), it has been improved significantly. 256MB of internal memory (twice the previous space), a stunning high-resolution screen, a re-invented media player and a slimmer design are just a few of the new features that keep blackberry users coming back for more. Take a look at the RIM website for more info and technical specs.

The FREE iPhone 3.0 Update!

Category Cool Stuff

As you may know, Apple released it's 3.0 firmware update just two days ago. The new features not only please the millions of current iPhone customers, but disarm the opposition by taking most of the last valid arguments AGAINST owning an iPhone they have left! In all seriousness, the reviews have been very positive over the new features which include an improved calendar, enhanced stock application and the addition of a voice recorder (one of my personal favorites). Below is a condensed list of major additions, improvements and changes reported on the Apple website:

  • Cut / Copy / Paste: Quickly and easily cut, copy and paste text from application to application. Select entire blocks of text or images from the web, too.
  • Landscape Keyboard: Rotate iPhone to use the larger keyboard in Mail, Messages, Notes and Safari.
  • MMS: Send MMS messages that include audio, photos, contact info and video taken straight from your phone.
  • Spotlight Search: In one place, find anything on your phone. Type in anything to see results for photos, email, contacts, calendar entries etc.
  • Voice Memos: Record anything on the go. Voice memos work with both the built-in iPhone microphone or with the mic on your headset.
  • Improved Calendar: Create meetings via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and subscribe to calendars with new CalDAV support.
  • iTunes Purchases: Download movies, TV shows, music videos and audiobooks from the iTunes store straight from your phone.
  • Enhanced Stocks: Get more at-a-glance information and new charts when turning the phone to landscape mode.

    A picture named M2

    • Safari Improvements: Enjoy faster performance, autofill login credentials and more.
    • Internet Tethering: Share your internet connection with your laptop through Bluetooth or USB.
    • Sync Notes: Sync all the notes you writ eon your iPhone back to your Mac or PC.
    • Shake to Shuffle: Give iPhone a shake and it shuffles to a different song in your library.
    • Find My iPhone: Using MobileMe, find your iPhone if you lose it and protect your privacy with Remote Wipe.

The update is free for all iPhone users, but will cost $9.95 for the iPod Touch. Just another reason to make the upgrade to the iPhone now that the 3Gs is out and the 3G is only $99!

NOW AVAILABLE Cool Stuff - Unchained Melodies with the Logitech Wireless DJ

Category Cool Stuff
Logitech Wireless DJ Music System lets you stream music from your PC to your stereo

If you want to play music without being tied to your PC, Logitech’s Wireless DJ Music System could be the answer. The system features an intuitive remote control that works with a USB transmitter that plugs into your PC. The transmitter sends the tunes to a receiver plugged into your home stereo, so you don’t have to be at your computer or your stereo to access your digital music library.

A wizard walks you through an easy setup, and then you can stream music from your PC to your stereo, including content from iTunes, Rhapsody, and Yahoo! Music Unlimited. The system can also be set to pick up internet radio stations.

With a powerful Bluetooth profile, the system supports up to 4 wireless receivers and has a rated range of 165 feet, so you can play music in most rooms in a typical home.

The remote control features a mechanical scroll wheel and large, intuitive displays and controls. The battery will typically last for a few days, and it recharges in about 3 hours. The only drawback is an occasional delay of a few seconds after you select your music, and a slight lag time when you’re scrolling through a long list of music.

Still, the sound quality is good for Bluetooth, and users report very little interference or noise, thanks to the adaptive frequency-hopping technology.

The Logitech Wireless DJ Music System retails for $249.99 It only works with Windows, but we’re hoping they’ll create a version for Mac OS X in the near future.

Cool Stuff - The Logitech Harmony 670 Universal Remote

Category Cool Stuff

With today's growing technology, how many remotes are you keeping track of in your living room? If you are comfortable plugging it into your computer to set up the programming, this remote will individually control all of your brand-name entertainment electronics with access to all menus and settings on each. Cool Stuff - The Apple MacBook Runs Windows XP

Category Cool Stuff

Power in an affordable package

Apple has made a small breakthrough with the new MacBook 13-inch. Costing around $1,699, the new MacBook is an affordable version of the MacBook Pro 15-inch and MacBook Pro 17-inch, keeping most of the cool features of the larger versions but with a smaller size and price tag.

The MacBook 13-inch has all the features that you would expect from Apple, such as the characteristic inch-thin body and a classy white surface that matches Apple’s iPod and other accessories.

The MacBook 13-inch features a stunning glossy screen that makes viewing photos and movies a pleasure, and it comes with the MagSafe adapter, the iSight webcam, Apple's Front Row, the Apple Remote, and the iLife '06 Suite.

Overall, though, if you’re looking for a Mac system in a notebook, this is a great choice at a good price.

If you need to install a Windows application, Apple provides a free download of Bootcamp, available here. You will need a copy of a Windows XP Pro to complete the installation.

Cool Stuff - Rock and Run with the Nike + iPod Sport Kit

Category Cool Stuff
Nike and iPod: the inevitable combo?

If you walk or run, you probably already do it with music. But now Nike and Apple have teamed up to take your exercise to the next level. The Nike + iPod Sport Kit not only pumps out the tunes to keep you running, it practically acts as a personal trainer.

Just attach the transmitter to the dock connector of your iPod nano, slip the sensor into your favorite pair of shoes, and you’re ready to go.

The iPod nano will ask you to enter your weight and to choose a PowerSong that you’ll be able to play at the touch of a button when you’re getting tired and need some inspiration.

During the workout, the system will tell you how far and fast you’ve gone, and how long you’ve been at it. When you’re done, it will tell you your time, distance and average speed, as well as how many calories you’ve burned.

Now for the fun part. Plug in the iPod nano and start up iTunes.

You’ll have the option of logging onto nikeplus.com, where you’ll see your time, speed and distance plus exactly when and where you turned on your PowerSong. You’ll get several options for recording, viewing and analyzing your data, so you can set goals and track your progress over time.

Best of all, you can become part of an online community, where other users encourage and challenge each other. You can create virtual track meets and other friendly competition. You can even find out what some of the world’s best athletes are listening to while they work out.

While Nike shoes are specifically designed to hold the sensor, users report that you can slip it between the shoelaces and the tongue of almost any shoe without seriously affecting its accuracy.

Unfortunately, the Nike + iPod Sport Kit only works with the iPod nano. If you have the shuffle or the mini you’re out of luck.

Overall, for $29 this is a great little gadget that might improve your health, too.

Cool Stuff - Logitech Mighty Mouse - MX Revolution

Category Cool Stuff

Spin your wheels

Optical is out, laser is in. Logitech’s latest mouse, the MX Revolution, is the “world’s most advanced mouse.” The state of the art laser guided tracking system is 20 times more accurate than the average optical mouse. The laser technology enables the cordless mouse to detect small movements over any surface, from your desk to your carpet, unlike an optical mouse which is limited by the LED light.

The hyper-scrolling feature lets you zip through long documents and the SmartShift technology automatically applies the scrolling mode that best fits your current application. The alloy wheel spins for seven seconds in free-spin mode, scrolling through hundreds of pages or thousands of rows while the click-to-click mode allows for more detailed navigation.

Just above the thumb rest is another scroll wheel that lets you flip between documents to compare or check email. The rechargeable Li-Ion battery with a 4-stage battery level meter lets you know when it's time to recharge, which is easily done when docked in the base station. Simply by highlighting a word or phrase in your document, the One-Touch search feature will display results from your favorite search engine.

The MX Revolution comes with a three year limited hardware warranty and is available online and in a few select electronic stores. This is one of Logitech’s best products, useable by both Windows XP (and the new Vista) and Mac OSX, but its ergonomic shape is best suited for right handed users. The steep price at $99.99 and up, might deter some buyers but the ‘smarter faster’ innovation just might pay off in the end.

Cool Stuff - Introducing... the Motorola Q!

Category Cool Stuff

The Motorola Q has already been called “the coolest smartphone in America.” It's a phone that plays music and videos, takes photos, and lets you send and receive e-mail.

Critics have said that the voice quality of the Q is among the best, whether you’re using the speakerphone, earpiece, or a Bluetooth headset.

The Q has most of the features of a Treo or BlackBerry, packed in a small, sleek package. At 2.5 inches wide and very flat half inch in thickness, the Q still has room for a 320-by-240 screen and a raised, angled QWERTY keyboard.

If you’re a BlackBerry user, you’ll be glad to know that this phone has the familiar wheel, along with a five-way cursor pad above the keyboard.

With support for Bluetooth stereo, the Q is a great music player for MP3, WMA, and protected WMA files downloaded from Microsoft-compatible music stores such as Yahoo! Music and Rhapsody.

On the email front, the Q comes with the Picsel Viewer for reading attachments, although you can’t edit these documents.

The Q also comes with a 1.3-megapixel camera.

A fully charged battery lasts about 5 hours 25 minutes, and the Q has 49MB of built-in storage so you can add additional programs.

Currently the Q is in limited release -- it is available from Verizon Wireless. Still, this is a nifty, versatile device for fun or pleasure, and we predict it will become very popular.

Cool Stuff - Blackberry 8800 Is the Sweetest Berry Yet

Category Cool Stuff

Finally, there's a Blackberry model with a trackball, so you can easily scroll vertically or horizontally. This innovation alone would make the Blackberry 8800 a keeper. It also provides GPS capability, with the Blackberry Maps application pre-loaded. With BlackBerry Maps, finding your way couldn't be easier. Check maps and get turn- by-turn directions quickly and conveniently, wherever you are. You can launch maps by typing or pasting in an address, or simply by clicking on an address in your address book.

The keyboard on this model features clever cut-off corners that make it easier to type. At this time, the Blackberry 8800 is only available on the Cingular network.

Naturally, you can drag videos and MP3s from a Mac or PC and play them on the Blackberry 8800, and there's a free video conversion program.

Overall, the 8800 is a good mix between the Pearl and the traditional Blackberry. It sells for $299.99 with Cingular activation, and you can view it here.

Cool Stuff - Apple iPod Touch: The Best iPod Yet!

Category Cool Stuff

In our previous newsletter, we featured the Apple iPhone; however, we still don't recommend it for your business due to its lack of Enterprise connectors to Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino.

In the meantime, if you want the breakthrough features of the iPhone, but you want to listen to music without buying new cell phone service, Apple's new iPod touch is your solution. It has most of the innovation that makes the iPhone great-minus the phone.

This might be one of the best portable media players in existence.

A picture named M2

If you've never tried the Cover Flow user interface of both the iPhone and iPod touch, you won't believe it! The easy, intuitive features include treats such as tunes that appear on album-like icons. You can sort through music as if you were thumbing through an old collection of vinyl records.

The iPod touch comes equipped with a Wi-Fi version of the iTunes Music Store, so you can buy music on the run.

There's more to this than mere convenience. Apple has an agreement with Starbucks allowing you to instantly buy the music you hear while you're sipping your latte.

If there's a significant flaw to the iPod touch, it's the earbuds. Big deal. Just replace them and you'll have the sound quality this device deserves. Despite the flimsy headset, the iPod touch is an overall winner.

We'll let you discover some of the new features on your own, but here's one example you should know about. You can access your music instantly by double- clicking the touch's single button. This makes the music controls appear over whatever screen you're currently viewing. You'll have the best in entertainment at your fingertips.

If you're used to the original iPod, you'll see that this one is a bit thinner and shorter, and just a tiny bit wider. As usual, Apple scores high on the physical beauty of their latest product. It's a pleasure just to hold the iPod touch in your hand, let alone enjoy music and videos with it.

The iPod touch retails around $300-$400, and you can check it out here.

Cool Stuff - Have Noise-Free Phone Conversations with the Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth Headset

Category Cool Stuff

If you have to compete with wind, vehicles, loud machinery or other people when you make a call, this headset will solve your problem. The company crossed their own proprietary knowledge with military-grade "noise shield" technology approved by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the U.S. Department of Defense's independent research branch.

The headset interprets the frequency of distracting sounds and emits sound waves that are a nearly exact negative frequency, effectively canceling out the interference.

See the Jawbone in action.  http://us.jawbone.com/demo.aspx

A picture named M2

The Jawbone Bluetooth headset gives you about 6 hours of talk time or 120 hours of standby time between charges. It comes with a battery strength indicator so you won't be taken by surprise.

The unusual layout of the buttons takes some time getting acclimated to, but once you get the hang of it, this headset gives you great results. It retails around $120, but it's well worth it if you often find yourself making phone calls in noisy environments.

You can buy one or find out more at http://www.jawbone.com

Cool Stuff - Take an MIT or UCLA Class on Your Way to Work

Category Cool Stuff

Some say that a 2 hour round trip drive each day can give you the equivalent of a semester of college in less than a year.

This may be literally true, if you listen to the podcasts now offered by most major universities. Princeton, Harvard, UC Berkeley and others offer podcasts of their professors' lectures.

Podcasts are often geared towards students who need help studying for exams or want tips on campus life. Some require that you work or enroll in the university.

But most of the universities recognize that learning continues for the rest of us, and they offer free lectures that are useful for everyone.

Not surprisingly, digital and technology-related topics make up the lion's share of available podcasts. But there's an eclectic mix of other subjects for the lifelong learner in you, as well as a lot of business lectures that could prove immediately useful.

Duke University has a special iTunes page with music, lectures and tips on Duke life. You'll need iTunes to gain access. Some podcasts are only available if you're associated with Duke University, but many are free to the public.
